Hee Hawk
Hee Hawk
Time:
8:00 pm
Hee Hawk is a jazz, folk, and new music ensemble. The group has been performing across New England for the past year and is a rising force in the world of acoustic music. Hee Hawk performs the original compositions of pianist Adam Lipsky. With strong roots in the jazz tradition, the players in Hee Hawk apply their harmonic awareness and improvisation technique to the original pieces. While some pieces have more open melodies reminiscent of Appalachian string music, others have subtle, more intricate harmonic content that shows influence from such masters as Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. With the highly emotive sensibilities of Appalachian and Depression-era folk music, the group weaves between consonance and dissonance bringing out all the soul of the blues. The sound of Hee Hawk is raw, elegant, and urgently vital.

Maine native Dustin saucier, former front man for dramatic rock group Arms Against A Sea, recently parted ways with the group to pursue a promising solo career. Dustin brings his powerful vocals, now toned down to display the quality of his self-written lyrics, which demonstrate a maturity most people might not achieve in a lifetime. While the term Emo conjures images of tragic youngsters, the poetic, perceptive, and introspective lyrics delivered with heartelt and vocals that are somehow both sad and sexy. Although he’s frequented the Portland scene for years, Dustin’s taking his solo act national, offering performances that convey his promise and potential.

Chicago singer-songwriter Heather Styka’s songs are as fresh as they are rooted in the folk and Americana tradition, delivered by a warm and soulful voice. Also a poet and writer, Styka has an instinct for lyrics that are smart and unexpected but never cryptic, analyzing the importance of moments, places, and relationships. In addition to numerous songwriting awards, her 2011 release Lifeboats for Atlantis received critical praise, hitting #3 on the national FOLK-DJ charts.
