Featured Wine
Gazela Vinho Verde
The Vinho Verde region of Portugal lies mainly between the River Douro and the Spanish border in the north and from the coast about sixty miles inland. The climate is hot in the summer but there is exceptionally high rainfall during the winter. The Verde refers not to the color of the wine but its youth. Pale straw color, this wine offers fresh apple aromas and a dry, crisp flavor that's prickly with light carbonation on the tongue all leading to a tart and cleansing finish.

Beer Specials
Every Tuesday evening we offer 23oz Harpoon UFO’s for $3 and great jazz, Motown, soul with Miss Evan, Bernie, Al, & friends! Harpoon UFO (unfiltered offering) is a Hefeweizen. Hefeweizens originated in Bavaria over 400 years ago. “Hefe” means yeast in German, “Weizen” means wheat. During the brewing process, the yeast and wheat are not filtered out of the beer, hence, the term unfiltered wheat beer or “hefeweizen”. Brewed with wheat malt, these beers tend to be refreshing and light-bodied with a slight fruity aroma. The unfiltered yeast remains in suspension, giving this style its signature cloudy color and a soft mouthfeel.
$3 (20oz) Guinness and Traditional Irish Music every Wednesday night. Every Wednesday various patrons can be seen running through the West End of Portland in the general direction of Blue. |

The Hat, The Basket, The Bucket...
Blue is a small and intimate venue and has always been committed to not having a cover charge. In lieu of this, we pass a basket, sometimes referred to as “the hat” or as Boghat’s Tom Rota likes to say, “The bucket”. In any case, this is how musicians at Blue are compensated for their performances. Your contributions to the basket are greatly appreciated.

Review
Death Match III, between Samuel James and Meantone last Thursday was everything we expected and more. There were limited addition T-shirts sold, licks, slams, new versions of old songs, and all manner of tumult! Meantone sang one of our favorites, “I’m Gonna Kick Your Ass”, no wait…that was a new rendition he had just written called, “I’m Gonna Kick Sam’s Ass.” But, Sam battled back, plucking Meantone’s guitar while trading licks during, “Knock, Knock, Knock.” At one point, Samuel reveal a mohawk, meant to mock his Brooklynite foe known at “Meantone”. But in the end, was this thing really settled? Stay tuned…

The Swear Words consist of Ronda and Kevin, who are both from the deep south and got washed up on a rock somewhere off the coast of Maine and stuck fast like two happy little clams. They make some cool kind of music, some original songs, some rockin’ cover tunes, and always a party.

An Evening of Piano Duets with Rachel Griffin & Leah Finkelstein!
|
| |
In the tradition of musical collaboration, Rachel & Leah, two local amazingly talented pianists, singer-songwriters, team up again right her at Blue!!! This show promises to be unforgettable!
Singer-songwriter Rachel Griffin, based in Portland, Maine, has always been a natural performer. Rachel began performing in the musical theater at age seven, appearing in venues throughout the state. By her senior year in high school, Rachel realized that she felt most comfortable at the piano, and began developing the natural songwriting skills that she had since childhood. Growing up Rachel was influenced by the soulful singing and songwriting of artists like Ben Folds, Billy Joel, Carole King and James Taylor, and she incorporated her passion for their art into her own music.
Local girl Leah Finkelstein was playing the piano long before her feet could touch the pedals, picked up the guitar when she was in high school and while in college, realized she could sing, too. At 19, she was playing nine gigs a week with local favorite Ken Grimsley and at 22, struck out on her own in Boston, created the band "The Help," and played regular shows in and around the city. These days, she is happy to be home and is hoping to re-establish herself here, this time as a solo artist. Watch this site for upcoming shows around Portland, and be sure to check out her original tunes, "One More Drink"

Addict’s Attic |
| |
Addict's Attic is an acoustic amalgam of delta blues, folk, newgrass and jazz. In the interim between college and their recent move to Portland (that is, before they connected to make make Addict's Attic), Evan Chase (mandolin) taught music in Connecticut while Robert Allen (guitar/banjo/slide) taught music in a small town in the Mississippi Delta. While teaching, Chase developed his own unique mandolin style which employs odd scales and synchopated rhythmic funk-grass styling. Chase also has a penchant for catchy melodies and melancholic songwriting, which nicely flavors many of the instrumental parts. Robert, on the other hand, took his influence from Indianola, Ms, home to blues greats such as B.B. King, Albert King, and Charley Patton. Although the traditional delta blues elements are there, Robert's writing is inspired by the intense emotional and physical tenor of MODERN day Mississippi Delta. These progressive blues speak to today's social conditions: post-plantation hierarchies and discpline, poverty, apathy, and pervasive materialism, all of which are both alienating and overwhelming to even the casual observer. As a result, there are depressive and haunted textures developed throughout the repertoire of Robert's writing. The combination of these two different styles are combined to make Addicts Attic, the left-over-empty-old-forgotten-about space in a house filled with self-absorbed, neurotic, amxious, and emotionally distressed spirits.
