Concert with Ed & Neil Pearlman - Highland Soles

Ed is one of America's finest fiddlers in the Scottish and Cape Breton styles. His playing was heavily influenced by the Cape Breton community in Boston and by native Scots players he brought to town while he was performer and director of the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club from 1981 to 1999.  Ed is a popular fiddle instructor in Portland and elsewhere; in October, he taught and performed in Scotland at the Blazin Fiddles traditional music camp.  Ed and his son Neil perform in their family band, Highland Soles.  Neil, a talented multi- instrumentalist in his own right, will join Ed on the piano and mandolin.  Neil has not only played Scottish music all his life, but also plays piano in the jazz quartet, Indigo For Now.

Beaux de l’air

Beaux de l'Air is a cabaret groove/jazz band out of Portland, Maine. Formed early in 2006, Beaux's music is groovy, often danceable, with dramatic and lyrical songs incorporating a variety of styles. One song remakes the 1910 song “let me call you sweetheart” with a funk groove, and has a quiet, sultry rap of the original verses over a drum break that segways into a trumpet melody. Other songs spoof styles, be it a hip-hop song rapping about Marx and Baudelair in “Cynic”, or an overdramatized and humorous narration of family craziness and pollution in the cabaret disco-tango-swing tune “Mercury”. The music incorporates elements from the 1930s and 40s, swing, latin, New Orleans, Eastern Europe, and tango, often using harmonic minor melodies over hip grooves that change from hip-hop, afrocuban, swing, tango to afropop.

Samuel James featuring Miss Nina Marie - Delta & Piedmont Blues

Delta Blues legends Tommy Johnson, Robert Johnson, and Petey Wheatstraw were all said to have sold their souls to the devil in exchange for their exceptional musical abilities. Now, we're not saying that Samuel James sold his soul to the Devil... but we're not NOT saying that either.

Sara Gillis & Lauryn Hottinger

Lauryn Hottinger is a New England native, fresh from recording her first independent album. Her introspective, poetic style projects classic images seen from a refreshingly new prospective. She takes the artistry of the female acoustic soloist to a different place. Her music draws the listener in with its personal style. The crisp emotion in her voice is accompanied by fluid, determined acoustic guitar. She weaves a tapestry of experience that tell tales of veiled uncertainties with a musical maturity beyond her years. A new music to open the mind. A new face that is turning heads.
