Concert - Don and Cindy Roy with Jay Young

At the forefront of the Franco American community in the Greater Portland area, the musical duo of Don and Cindy Roy have long entertained audiences in the Southern Maine area and beyond.  Don is a champion fiddler with depth in many styles of fiddling.  Hailing from roots deep in the Maritimes and Quebec, the Roys’ musical passion lies with the French Canadian tradition followed closely by Celtic music.  Don has been a member of many successful groups including bluegrass, Irish, and French bands.  He directed the popular Maine French Fiddlers for its duration.  Don has received Fellowship awards from the state of Maine in 1994 and 2001 for excellence in traditional music.  Don’s CD “Thanks for the Lift” earned a nomination for the National Heritage Award. Cindy, also a member of the former Maine French Fiddlers, is well known for her step dancing and piano accompaniment which is among the best in New England.  Augmented by her "rhythmic feet" she adds life and enthusiasm to the music.  Don and Cindy’s families were getting together for house parties long before Don and Cindy met on a blind date and began to play music together in 1980. The heritage continues and Cindy and Don will entertain you with a blend of fiddle and piano styles that are the epitome of traditional Franco-American music in Maine. Jay Young plays upright bass with the group.  Jay began his musical evolution playing folk music on a 12 string guitar in the 1960's and has since come to the bass through a number of different styles and bands. He's been accompanying Don and Cindy Roy for many years in a variety of bands including The Maine French Fiddlers.  At times it is hard to distinguish Jay's bass playing from Cindy's left hand rhythms on the piano.  Jay claims he has a psychic connection and knows what Cindy is going to play before she plays it. Recent performances have included The Library of Congress and The Kennedy Center in Washington DC.  Don, Cindy and Jay have also performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, The Barns at Wolf Trap, with Garrison Keillor on “A Prairie Home Companion” and at National Folk Festivals.

SAMUEL JAMES LIVES!!!!! Delta Blues legends Tommy Johnson, Robert Johnson, and Petey Wheatstraw were all said to have sold their souls to the devil in exchange for their exceptional musical abilities. Now, we're not saying that Samuel James sold his soul to the Devil... but we're not NOT saying that either.

The Mutineers play traditional folk, blues and old-time country music.  With the necessary ingredients (guitar, mandolin, acoustic bass, dobro, banjo) the songs are adapted and arranged in ways that are at once traditional and unique. The songs are selected, arranged and sung by Stuart MacDonald, who has been collecting, learning and playing traditional folk music for a number of years. He is joined by multi-talented stand-up acoustic bassist Rod Pervier. Rod has a wealth of musical experience and is an accomplished, and highly sought-after musician, playing contra dances and other events. Dick Hodges rounds out the trio with tasteful mandolin, dobro and lead guitar picking. Having played in a wide variety of bands previously, Dick lends his knowledge & varied musical background.
