* Jon AanastadJon Aanastad

Time: 6:00 pm

As of late, Jon has turned to an edgier pop-rock sound and his band, The Sugarcane has honed in on some of Aanestad’s songs that are closer to the bone—still very accessible and commercially viable, but more visceral. The band is focusing its irreverent pop sound, and taking on arrangements that fuse modern pop, old-school soul and contemporary folk. Since 2009 and the release of Aanestad’s EP, “Songs From A City”, the band has gained momentum playing in three festivals and in some of the best venues in the Northeast, and Aanestad has toured nationally as a solo act. Jon Aanestad’s self-titled debut EP, “Songs From A City” was a blend of Folk, R&B; and Pop. Released in 2009, it combined a sort of country sensibility with a soulful backbone. “City Living” the last track, was an Al Green inspired tune while “High Heel Hangover” was more of a pop anthem meant to catch an ear–which it did in the UK Songwriting Contest where it landed as a semi-finalist song. And although the EP was a great experience for everyone involved–it may have been too safe, Aanestad admits.

Big Names, Small Room Series: Cillian and Niall Vallely Niall and Cillian Vallely learned their music the old-fashioned way - from their parents Brian and Eithne, who founded the Armagh Pipers’ Club, a group that for over three decades has fostered the revival of traditional music in Ireland’s north. Brian Vallely plays the Uilleann pipes and Eithne the fiddle, but Niall instead took up the concertina, an instrument not usually associated with music from Ulster. His fearless exploration of the concertina’s undiscovered capabilities has helped redefine its role in irish music. Based since 1988 in Cork City, Niall was a founding member of the well-known group Nomos. He also played a prominent part in Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin’s ‘River of Sound’ television project and has performed in recent years with piping great Paddy Keenan, bluegrass mandolinist Tim O’Brien, and singer Karan Casey, his partner in life as well as music. Niall’s solo recording Beyond Words was released in 1998 to much critical acclaim. Cillian took up his father’s instrument and polished his skills with tutelage from the late Armagh piper Mark Donnelly. His mastery of chanter, drones and regulators, and of all the accents and moods of the traditional piping idiom, place him in the first rank of today’s Irish pipers. Cillian now tours with the group Lúnasa, and has also performed extensively in America with groups such as New York’s Whirligig and Paddy O’Brien’s Chulrua, and has appeared with fiddler Seamus Connolly, Riverdance on Broadway and Tim O’Brien’s The Crossing. * Martin EnglandMartin England

Time: 6:00 pm

England’s music is that of all great American troubadours; Americana, folk, roots rock, and occasional old school country. It’s the common language he shares with contemporaries like Ray Lamontagne and founding legends like Johnny Cash, equal parts light and shadow cast in emotionally-charged, heart-harvesting songs.

* The BurnersThe Burners

Time: 8:00 pm

There's a new band in Portland whose passion, drive and musicianship can best be described by their name, The Burners. Lead by poetic songwriter and break-neck rhythm guitarist Ryan Flaherty, The Burners consist of guitarist Mike Arciero, bassist Duane Edwards, accordionist Laura Balladur and violinist Phil Bloch. This eloquently rowdy ensemble of modern-day gypsy, americana, french cafe, rock and jazz pioneers are lighting up every stage they play with relentless energy and stage presence. The Wire of Portsmouth, NH describes the Burner's music as "a blend of gypsy americana played with fire and sweat." Perhaps a more accurate description follows with a comparison to famous bands like Gogol Bordello, The Devil Makes Three and The Doors. Virtuosic rhythms on acoustic guitar, mandolin and upright bass are complimented by cafe accordion, hot violin and harmonized vocals. Captivating lyrics, burning tempos, and diverse instrumentation define the bands music. The crisp sonority of each song invokes yips, hollers and devilish dancing from audiences everywhere. The Burners hight-spirited, indie folk sound offers a flavorful stew of fiery, passionate and foot-stomping music. The Burners formed in 2011 as a vehicle for guitarist and singer Ryan Flaherty. Flaherty had put in the hours to hone himself into a razor-sharp guitarist and polish his songwriting craft. Flaherty had written a handful of tunes rooted in Americana and Gypsy Jazz styles. He began playing these tunes with jazz and tango guitarist Mike Arciero and bassist Duane Edwards from Portland, ME. The mix of folk and gypsy styles became the backbone of The Burners original style. They released Flaherty's first album "Hungry Moon" in 2011. Soon after accordionist Laura Balladur, vocalist Jennie Backstrom and violinist Phil Bloch came on board to round out The Burners sound. On February 26th, 2012, the musicians recorded their album "Here Comes Everyone" in a matter of three hours at Acadia Studios in Portland, ME. The outcome was amazing. In a few hours the band had recorded a stellar live album that sounded like it had taken months to record. The band released the album the next month and it was accepted into Pandora Radio's genome by the end of March, 2012. The Musicians: Ryan Flaherty - acoustic guitar, lead vocals Laura Balladur - accordion, vocals Michael Arciero - guitar, vocals Phil Bloch - violin, mandolin, vocals, Duane Edwards - upright bass, vocals

Time: 10:00 pm

The Four Legged Faithful are a band made up of 4 ordinary men who all thrive on playing music together. Their aim is not to play traditional folk or bluegrass music, but instead to create beautiful, heart-felt, and genuine music using traditional folk/bluegrass instruments. They create a sound that is honest and reflects the band's many musical influences from nearly all genres. All members sing; creating multiple combinations of 2, 3, and 4-part harmonies. All members write and sing songs about their thoughts, families, and the natural world that surrounds them. For a band without a drummer, The Four Legged Faithful achieve an incredible level of intensity using foot percussion and layered rhythms throughout every measure.

Time: 8:00 pm

Singer-songwriter Xenia Dunford has been evolving as a musician over the course of the past few years. Her 2011 self-titled EP featured heavy amounts of jazz, piano ballads and piano pop, while her second release, 2012’s Lonely Streets EP, saw her mixing those same elements with more rock and acoustic sensibilities. With the release of her first full-length album, His & Hers, Dunford’s evolution continues as she adds even more musical variety to her repertoire with hints of folk rock, country and Americana appearing throughout this album. All of this is a far cry from where she started.
